Treat the junk drawer as a small household utility drawer, not a place for anything without a home. Empty it, remove trash and duplicates, and keep only the small items you actually use there. Use a sectional organizer or several modular trays for categories such as pens, scissors, tape, clips and a few frequently used small tools. Keep overstock somewhere else, and give the drawer a quick reset every few months so it doesn't turn back into clutter.
Put the things you reach for most often in the easiest spots, and reserve high, low or deep storage for occasional-use supplies. Group like items together so you can see what is running low before buying more.
Measure the real opening and any obstructions before ordering, including hinges, handles, pipes and the room needed to pull something out. The best organizer is the one you can use comfortably every day, not necessarily the one that fills every inch.
