Separate cords by purpose and keep them contained so they don't become one giant knot.
For a larger collection, I like a compartmented electronics-accessory organizer that lets you separate charging cords, adapters and small accessories.
Label cords when their purpose isn't obvious.
And before storing a mystery cable for the next decade, determine whether you still own anything it connects to.
