How much extra clearance should I allow when measuring for a pull-out organizer?

Mr. OrganizedMr. Organized's Answer

As a rule of thumb, I allow about 1/2 inch of extra clearance. Measurements can be slightly off, and product dimensions or labels are not always exact.

Measure the real opening and any obstructions before ordering, including hinges, handles, pipes and the room needed to pull something out. The best organizer is the one you can use comfortably every day, not necessarily the one that fills every inch.

My final check is practical: can you find what you need quickly, put it back just as easily, and see when the space is getting full? If not, simplify the categories or move the storage closer to where you use it. An organizing system should make life easier, not become another chore.
